Red Hydrogen One Houdini Edition

Red held a private party on August 30, 2018 and gave the pre production prototypes of the Red Hydrogen One phone having a nickname as "Houdini" to developers and other people who had pre ordered the phone. This phone, Houdini Edition, marks another step forward for the company ahead of the phone's October launch. Marques Brownlee AKA MKBHD published the first unboxing video of the Red Hydrogen One phone on YouTube.

Initial Thoughts

1. Expensive

The Red Hydrogen One phone is very expensive. It starts at $1295 for the aluminum model and $1595 for the titanium model and these prices are preorder prices. Nobody knows the actual retail prices yet.

2. Design

This phone is very huge. It has got a blocky design with lots of grills and carbon fibre like look. The design of this phone is not to pleasing when compared to other flagship phones like Galaxy S9, iPhone X and so on. It feels like a phone from 1990's with thick bezels. But it is unique for a 2018 phone (announced in 2017) when most of the phones are copying either Apple or Samsung.

3. Battery Life

Red Hydrogen One phone comes with a 4000mAh battery. I think that's pretty good. You can get all day battery life depending on the usage.

4. Holographic Display

Red Hydrogen One phone comes with a holographic display. In order to enjoy or appreciate this feature you must experience it in person. It doesn't show up pretty well in the videos. We are not yet sure of the display resolution.

5. Cameras

One of the main features in this phone are the cameras. We are not sure about the camera specifications. But, RED being a camera company, there is something to expect from the camera on this phone. It comes with a dual camera setup. There are several pins present at the bottom of the phone. Therefore there may be an option to attach a extra lens or a camera module. We're not sure about that as well.

6. Processor and RAM

Hydrogen One comes with Snapdragon 835 processor with 6 GB Ram.

7. Final Conclusions

Red is a camera company. Its is first time making a smartphone. This Houdini Edition is handed to only few people in order to test the phone, report any bugs and so on. The phone was set to launch in late Q1 of 2018 but there seems to be some problems, which they are trying to deal with.

I can't really recommend this phone to anybody, mainly because of it's price. You can get a better phone with good specifications for way lesser price tag. Huawei P20 Pro is also better than this phone in terms of its design, user interface. Finally it's your decision, if you think that $1300 (most of the good DSLRs costs way lesser than this) is worth then you can buy it or else let the bawlers buy it.
